Diabetes Stigma: What It Is and How to Push Back

Living with type 1 diabetes already requires constant effort. But many people also face judgment, blame, and shame.

This is called diabetes stigma.

In a conversation between Scott K. Johnson and Matthew Garza from diaTribe, one message stood out clearly:

Diabetes is not your fault.

What Is Diabetes Stigma?

Diabetes stigma includes:

  • Blame or judgment
  • Hurtful comments or jokes
  • Shame or self-doubt
  • Discrimination in care, work, or school

Why It Matters

Stigma is more than words. It can shape:

  • Healthcare experiences
  • Access to treatment
  • Policy and funding decisions

It also impacts daily life. People who experience stigma may:

  • Avoid appointments
  • Feel less confident managing diabetes
  • Experience more stress or burnout

Where It Shows Up

  • Everyday life: Comments from friends, family members, and strangers; also  in media portrayals
  • Healthcare: Feeling judged, blamed, or dismissed by a provider–over time, this can make people disengage from care
  • Work and school: Being asked to hide diabetes care or treated differently because of it

How to Fight Stigma

1. Find support:  Connect with people who understand your experience.

2. Trust your experience: You know your body and your diabetes best.

3. Share your story: When it feels safe, speaking up can build understanding.

Language Matters

Words like “control” or “non-compliant” can feel judgmental. A better approach focuses on:

  • Respect
  • Context
  • Team-based care

Supporters can help by asking about language preferences from the beginning, and listening without judgment.
