Around the Circle: Living Well with T1D: Episode #18–Diana Isaacs and Natalie Bellini on Translating the Latest Diabetes Research into Real Life

Every year, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions brings together thousands of researchers, clinicians, diabetes educators, and industry leaders to share the latest advances in diabetes care.

If you live with type 1 diabetes, it can feel overwhelming. Much of the research is highly technical, and it is not always obvious what could make a difference in everyday life.

In an episode of Blue Circle Health’s podcast “Around the Circle: Living Well with T1D”, diabetes experts Diana Isaacs, PharmD, BCPS, BC-ADM, CDCES, and Natalie Bellini, DNP, FNP-BC, BC-ADM, CDCES, joined host Scott Johnson to translate this year’s biggest announcements into practical takeaways.

What Is ADA Scientific Sessions?

ADA Scientific Sessions is one of the most influential diabetes conferences in the world. Researchers present new findings on diabetes medications, technology, prevention, complications, and future treatments.

Some research is still in its earliest stages, while other studies may directly influence diabetes care in the coming years.

The conference includes:

  • Research presentations
  • Clinical education sessions
  • New technology demonstrations
  • Research posters featuring early findings
  • Exhibits from diabetes companies and nonprofit organizations

Not every study changes care immediately. Many represent the first step in a longer scientific process that leads to larger studies, regulatory approval, and eventually new treatment options.

Why Early Research Matters

One theme throughout the conversation was that today’s research often becomes tomorrow’s standard of care.

Natalie Bellini pointed to the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) as an example. When those findings were first presented decades ago, they represented new research. Today, they have shaped how type 1 diabetes is managed around the world.

Scientific progress happens one step at a time. While some discoveries are years away from widespread use, they help build the future of diabetes care.

Exciting Progress in Islet Cell Transplant Research

One of the most discussed presentations at this year’s conference focused on the Eledon trial.

Researchers reported that 12 participants who received islet cell transplants were living without insulin after treatment.

Another important finding involved a newer medication, Tegoprubart, used instead of traditional immunosuppressive drugs. Researchers found participants tolerated the treatment well while maintaining insulin independence for as long as two years.

The experts emphasized that there is still important work ahead, including:

  • Making treatment more accessible
  • Producing enough islet cells for larger numbers of patients
  • Continuing to study long-term outcomes
  • Expanding research at additional medical centers

While this is not yet a cure available to everyone, it represents meaningful progress.

Continuous Ketone Monitoring Could Help Prevent DKA

Another development generating excitement was continuous ketone monitoring (CKM).

Unlike traditional ketone testing using urine test strips or a finger stick, continuous ketone monitors measure ketones alongside glucose throughout the day.

Potential benefits include:

  • Earlier warning signs of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Alerts when insulin delivery has been interrupted
  • Additional safety during illness
  • Better monitoring for people using insulin pumps and diabetes-related drugs

The experts noted that Abbott’s dual glucose and ketone sensor has already been approved in Europe and has been submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for review.

Importantly, early versions of this technology will not automatically adjust insulin delivery. Instead, they will notify users when ketones rise so they can take appropriate action with guidance from their healthcare team.

Could Continuous Ketone Monitoring Expand Treatment Options?

The discussion also explored how continuous ketone monitoring could make certain medications safer for people with type 1 diabetes.

SGLT2 inhibitors offer benefits for heart and kidney health, but they can increase the risk of euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis, where ketones rise even though blood glucose may not appear dangerously high.

If continuous ketone monitoring can identify rising ketones earlier, it may eventually help clinicians use these medications more safely in appropriate patients.

Inhaled Insulin Continues to Expand

Another notable update from ADA Scientific Sessions was expanded approval for inhaled insulin in children ages six and older.

The speakers discussed how clinics are beginning to incorporate inhaled insulin into diabetes care and determine which patients may benefit most.

As with any therapy, healthcare providers will evaluate whether it is an appropriate option based on each person’s medical history and clinical needs.

Turning Research Into Better Care

Throughout the discussion, one message remained consistent.

Scientific discoveries rarely change diabetes care overnight. Instead, progress happens through careful research, repeated studies, publication, and collaboration among researchers and healthcare professionals.

Each new finding adds to what is known today and helps shape the treatments, technologies, and care options available tomorrow.
